Synopsis
Renny Harlin's "Legend Of The Ancient Sword" (2018) is an ambitious cinematic endeavor, attempting to fuse Hollywood action sensibilities with the essence of Chinese Xianxia fantasy. The film immediately captivates with its lavish CGI spectacle, crafting an expansive mythological world filled with ethereal landscapes and meticulous costume and set designs. However, this heavy reliance on visual effects occasionally overshadows nuanced character development, making the narrative feel somewhat stretched.
Performances-wise, Wang Leehom portrays Baili Tusu with commendable effort, though at times he struggles to fully convey the tragic emotional depth required for the character. Victoria Song as Wen Renyu brings a resilient presence but occasionally falls short of psychological complexity. Godfrey Gao, with his inherent charisma, provides a captivating supporting turn. The Wuxia-inspired martial arts sequences are elaborately choreographed and visually striking, yet they sometimes lean more towards grand exhibition rather than organically serving the story. As a film adaptation of a popular video game, it underscores the potential of Eastern fantasy epics on the big screen, though it still grapples with balancing visual grandeur and substantive storytelling. Its place is a significant visual contribution to Chinese fantasy cinema, even if it doesn't quite break new ground in narrative or acting prowess.
